Let’s face it, repairs for water damage and any subsequent mold infestation is costly, and can run up to tens of thousands of dollars. So who’s going to pay for your mold remediation services?

First, let’s get the bad news out of the way. If you are counting on your home insurance company to foot the bill, you might be surprised to learn that many claims are denied. The key is whether or not the water damage, which caused the mold in the first place, is deemed an emergency covered on your policy.

A simple rule of thumb: if your insurance policy covers the water damage, then chances are good that the resulting mold remediation services are at least partially covered as well. If not, then it will be denied.

For example, if the mold is deemed to be caused by a burst pipe covered by most home insurance policies, then you are covered for remediation costs. However, if the mold came about as a result of persistent moisture or seepage from lack of maintenance or blood waters, then you will be on the hook unless you have flood insurance.

Here in southern Florida, many homes are damaged by flooding after a storm such as hurricanes. Any resulting water and mold damage is categorized as “caused by a peril” and will be denied claim unless you have special coverage.

Here are some other common reasons for claims being denied:

  • Mold presence caused by a lack of adequate dehumidifying solutions in place
  • Poor workmanship in your plumbing
  • Roof leaks caused by old shingles with inadequate upkeep and care
  • Mold growth from a slow leaky faucet discovered after a long time

As you can see, there are many scenarios where your insurance company will not pay for mold remediation costs. Also, keep in mind that many policies contain a limit on remediation claims, often up to several thousand dollars only, when the actual cost of such repairs can be in the tens of thousands of dollars. Once again, you will be responsible for paying the remaining uncovered portion.

Thankfully, there is some good news as well. In cases where mold grew after a fire in your residence, and resulting humidity from the water used to put it out, the home insurance covering the fire damage will most likely also pay for the mold remediation.

Since mold remediation expenses can run up very quickly and you can’t always count on your insurance company to foot the bill, therefore it’s in your best interest to do the following:

  • Always be vigilant about keeping your home free of excess moisture and humidity. Make sure you check your plumbing and have a sound ventilation/dehumidifying system in place.
  • If you suspect a presence of mold, if you can see them just yet, call a specialist such as ITD Restoration to do a thorough check to make sure. This could often mean the difference of spending a few hundred or a few thousand.
  • In the event of water damage from any cause, contain the source quickly if you can. Then, contact a certified remediation company (again, ITD Restoration is a great choice) to get professional help.
  • Check your home insurance policy to ensure you are getting the most comprehensive coverage possible against perils such as flooding. Upgrade the policy if necessary.

The bottom line is that you need to take proactive steps to protect your home from getting mold in the first place and get professional treatment at the earliest onset to limit its damage.
